    CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 56: Back in the U.S.A.

by Nick Fox February 26, 2013
    February 26, 2013

Lady Liberty. Hey girl.   Eight weeks out of the country. Four months on the road, total. I landed at JFK airport in New York and it just felt great to be home. It’s been years since I left the …

    CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 55: Mexico City

by Nick Fox February 24, 2013
    February 24, 2013

Rarrr! It’s interesting that one of the best days of my trip would open with me filled with regret and existential questioning. Why, I wondered, did I think it was a good idea to take a 7 a.m. flight out …

CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 52-54: Preparing to return

by Nick Fox February 19, 2013
    February 19, 2013

Greetings from San Jose, where I’m tucked away in a pension next to the Justice Department, watching the daylight get soft and sitting in the cool air of Costa Rica’s capital. It’s very quiet here, and that’s the way I’ve …

    CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 51: Leaving Nicaragua

by Nick Fox February 16, 2013
    February 16, 2013

In order to leave Nicaragua today, I was going to have to catch the 7 a.m. boat up the river. There’s less service on the weekends, and if I missed that one, the next one was at 2 p.m., which …

    CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 50: El Castillo

by Nick Fox February 16, 2013
    February 16, 2013

Last night, I ended up at a little place called Restaurante Orquidea for dinner, where I sat alone on the upstairs terrace, looking at the moon over the tin roof of a store, shining its light on a palm tree. …

CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 49: Take me to the river

by Nick Fox February 16, 2013
    February 16, 2013

This was a long day, even by the standards of the previous two, but a strangely relaxing one. I think I’m finally getting the hang of traveling again, and of course this would happen on the final few days of …

CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 47: Hitchhikers’ guide to Nicaragua

by Nick Fox February 16, 2013
    February 16, 2013

Two of the most important travel lessons you will learn in Nicaragua: 1) The whole world is a bus stop. 2) No bus is ever full. There are few things in Nicaragua that will give you a bigger dose of …

CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 45/46: Jinotega and the urge to flee

by Nick Fox February 12, 2013
    February 12, 2013

I want to start off by saying how beautiful the Jinotega Valley is. This is the major coffee growing region of the country, and it features a lovely climate with cool nights (I wore a sweater for the first …

CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 44: Close shave in Matagalpa

by Nick Fox February 12, 2013
    February 12, 2013

This is a testimonial in favor of something that is very common in Nicaragua, and almost non-existent in the United States right now: the straight razor shave. Shaving in Central America has been tricky. I use an old school …
