Waxwing Music: Listening to Joni Mitchell With My Mother

by Nick Fox

My latest piece for Waxwing Literary Journal is one I’ve been working on, in some form or another, for years.

There is no artist I associate more with my mother than Joni Mitchell, and no album more than Court and Spark. Now, nine years after I lost her, I continue to find my mother in Mitchell’s lyrics, and examine how my mother’s years in Paris and my own in New Orleans aligned us in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

I’m grateful to the folks at Waxwing for publishing this.
