Re-Introducing This Blog

by Nick Fox

I get asked if I ever keep a blog. And the truth, technically, is that I do. The problem with said blog, as you can see through a quick scan, is that I never write in it. My upcoming set of posts will be my first in nearly two years.

Candlelight

I needed to work on my pretty.

So, is there a point to this? I hope I’ve found one. I thought back over the past few years and realized that the only time I’ve written regularly in this blog was during my travels in Central America. I have a large scale trip coming up, which bodes well for this. But in the meantime, there needs to be some practice.

Essentially, I’m going to attempt to be an archaeologist of my own backyard, and New Orleans is a fine backyard.

I’m not certain what this is going to evolve into, but it will evolve into something. There are no shortage of places to go, people to know, things to eat or stories to tell in this city. I moved here eight years ago and still feel I’m only just scratching the surface. So I’ll keep scratching and see what I come up with.

For now, the goal is to write about people and places in New Orleans. I anticipate this is going to revolve around food at first, and eventually into stories either in my words or those of someone else. I’ll talk about where I go and what I see, but I hope to turn this more and more over to people telling their own stories in interviews. Sometimes in print, sometimes with audio as I learn my way around the technology. Perhaps, in time, with video as well.

I have a big trip coming up this summer. Visits to several destinations out west, including Hawaii. If I can follow the example I set in Central America, there’s potential for a lot of good, consistent road stories. In the meantime, my own city can provide practice at this. It’s a way of coming back to writing, and a way of waking up to the world around me.

This will be a learning process, which is fine. The whole site needs an update, as does the author. So if things are a little wonky at first, that’s cool. Better to iron out the kinks as I go than sit on my hands waiting for everything to be perfect before I even start moving.

So bear with me and follow along if you’re feeling it. I’ll try to make this something people enjoy reading and something I can be proud of. It will be personal, it will be a little messy, but it will be something new, which is more than I’ve put out in the world in far too long.
