CENTRAL AMERICA—Day 42/43: Heading north

San Cristobal Volcano. Still smoking.

Very little to report tonight. I’m holed up in Matagalpa, in the cool air of the highlands. Left Jiquilillo yesterday and returned to Leon, along with a couple guests from Rancho Esperanza (Instant Adventurers Club strikes again), passed the San Cristobal volcano (which erupted just a couple months ago), and spent the evening doing laundry, then meeting my fellow travelers for beers and street pizza. Today, caught a bus to Esteli, then another one to Matagalpa.

It’s quiet here. I’m in a seven-bed dorm all by lonesome, and I’m looking out over the town. The streets are San Francisco steep, and the air is cool enough that I’ve had to close the window so I don’t shiver tonight, a first in my time in Central America. Tomorrow, I’ll look around for a place to get a straight razor shave, and make plans for hiking and camping in the area. This is the major coffee growing region of the country. That will have to be looked into as well.
