THE GREAT CENTRAL AMERICAN ADVENTURE: Preperation—Part 3: Baron von Widget

by Nick Fox

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve recently become owner-by-proxy of my girlfriend’s rabbit, who goes by the moniker of Baron von Widget (a.k.a.–The Widge).

A big part of any adventure for us now involves getting the Baron into the hands of capable bunnysitters so that we don’t have to worry while we are on the road. This can be a challenge, but only for us.I’ve fallen quite in love with the little man, and leaving him is hard. I mean, look at this guy:

Don’t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?

Fluffy, no? Don’t let that fool you. The Widge is a lean mean chewing machine who slaps dogs in the face and does unspeakable things with female cats. I’m not making this up. He’s a bad man. When Corrinne and I drove from New Orleans to Maine we were worried about his health. Rabbits are supposed to be fragile and moody, and frequently will stop eating if their routine is disrupted. Not the Baron. Within two hours he settled into his brand new crate and was golden for the next five days. He’s lived in five different houses in his two years in this world, and it rarely takes him more than an hour to adjust.

For this leg of the trip, Corrinne’s friend Danielle has taken him on. She sent us a few texts last night, worried that the Baron would be cold and if she should put a blanket in his area. We told her that the blanket thing has been attempted, and Widget simply chewed a hole in the blanket and showered it with prolific poops.

I do what I can.

In short, as long as the Baron has a place to stay, we need not worry. But being away from that face for two months is a challenge.
